Pre War
*1 Although many records record Edward as Herbert Edward, it has been able to positively identify him in many records though his mother's name (pension cards and Soldier's effects) and the sibling names (Soldier's effects, census records).
*2 Despite the Soldiers Died In The Great War database records that Edward was born in Hitchin, we do not believe this to be correct for the following reasons.
His birth was registered in Horsham, Sussex and he was baptised in Itchingfield, Suffolk. In the census his birth place was recorded as Itchingfield, Suffolk (1891), Henfield Sussex (1901), He does not appear on any Hitchin or other Hertfordshire memorial. Neither of his parents, and none of his siblings were recorded as born in Hitchin.
Unless further information reveals any connection to Hitchin, we conclude that the SDITGW information is incorrect.
