Pre War

Charles Edward Waldock was born in 1894, in St Ippolyts/St Ippollitts, Herts, son of Edward Waldock (a Hay and Straw Carter) and Fanny Waldock (nee Gray), one of 5 children. He was Baptised on 13 May 1894, at St Ippolyts Church, St Ippolyts.

The 1901 Census records Charles aged 7, living with his parents, sister Maggie (13), two brothers Percy (11) and Frederick (1) in, St Ippolyts.

The 1911 Census records Charles aged 17, and working as a Wood Machinist, still living at home with his parents and brother Frederick (11), in, St Ippolyts.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted at Hitchin, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 14326. On completion of his training he arrived in France in August 1915. He was Killed in Action on 15 July 1916, at The Battle of Bazentin Ridge, (14 – 17 July 1916), (part of The Battle of the Somme 1 July 1916 to 18 November 1916). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the fallen in France.

The Battalion lost 245+ men, killed, wounded, or missing that day, Charles being one of them.

His father Edward received his effects of £1-7s-6d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £8-10s-00d.
