Pre War

Born in Hitchin on 22nd February 1894 and christened on 15th April 1894, Frank was the son of Charles and Jane Waldock of Damask Green, Weston.

In the 1911 Census, aged 17, he is living with his parents and his five siblings: Charles, Florence, Godfrey, Susan and Eva. The family owned a farm at Damask Green and as such, Frank is registered as a “House Boy at a Farm House”; his siblings also helped out in similar roles.

He enlisted in Bedford.

Wartime Service

Frank’s enlistment date is unknown; what is known, however, is that formerly he was 6311, Essex Regt. and later was transferred to the 5th Battalion of the Border Regiment and assigned the Regimental Number 242016.

Frank was a part of the 3:15 assault on the opening of the Battle of Transloy Ridge. He was killed shortly after the first assault began aged 22. A full inscription given on the Weston Memorial is below:

The attack commenced at 3:15 PM after a prolonged artillery bombardment, the four waves left the trenches at intervals of 50 yards. The two lines were captured before the enemy realised we were in possession. A small number of battalions on the right reached the first objective, resulting in a strenuous and responsible cleaning-up job for the troops on their flanks.”

He is remembered (With Honour) at Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 6 A and 7 C.
