Born on 17 Apr 1892 at Kirkthorpe, Wakefield son of the Rev. Stephen Cawley and Mercy (May) Walley of Hardingham Rectory, Norfolk. Educated at Haileybury College 1905- 11 and Clare College, Cambridge, (B.A. Mathematics 1914). He was unmarried.

Wartime Service

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 15 Aug 1914 and Lieutenant in Nov 1914. Entered France on 26 Jan 1915. He was wounded at Richebourg on 25 Apr 1915 and again at Festubert on 9 May 1915 but returned to the front. He was killed in action while encouraging his men during a German counter attack.
