Pre War

Thomas John was born in 1892 in Tottenham, London, the only son of John Fouldes, a diamond merchant, and Mary Ann (nee Staples) who lived in Douglas Road, Harpenden.


Thomas worked in his father’s business. In 1917 Thomas married Lydia Washington Gray in Harpenden, 1917.

Wartime Service

Thomas enlisted as Private 350 in the Royal Fusiliers but was later commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant Royal Field Artillery on 4 Dec 1914, Lieutenant on 1 Jan 1916 and Captain 1917. 


Thomas was killed in action on 25 Jun 1917 while serving with A Battery 114 Brigade RFA . He was Mentioned in Despatches.

Additional Information

His wife, Mrs L W. Fouldes, Bencleugh, Harpenden, Herts. ordered his headstone: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS AMAVIMUS,AMAMUS,AMABIMUS". War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £190.5s 9d, also probate of £4804 9s 2d paid to his widow and his father. His widow also received a gratuity of £250.
