Pre War

Son of James and Mary Ann (nee HODGKINSON) FOX of Watford.

His parent’s marriage is proving elusive.  James died 1935 in Watford aged 82, and was buried 11 December in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Mary died 1941 in Watford aged 85, and was buried 2 August, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Aubrey was born 7 January 1894 in Watford, and attended Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 5 October 1903 to 13 March 1908.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 7 he lived in Watford, with his parents and seven siblings.  On the 1911 Census, an engineer’s labourer in an ice factory aged 17, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 30 July 1915, and was killed in action in the front line near Contalmaison.

Additional Information

There are articles about Aubrey in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 1 April 1916 and 22 July 1916 (including a Death announcement); plus In Memoriams in the issues dated 7 July 1917, 13 July 1918 and 12 July 1919.  There is also an article in the St Michael’s Parish Magazine dated August 1916. Unfortunately, Aubrey’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
