Bishop's Stortford Town Memorial

Edward Fox was born on 21 January 1899 in Canning Town, London to Abraham and Louise Fox, and baptised on 18 February 1899 at Holy Trinity, Canning Town. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Bravington Road, Paddington, London, although his father was not listed. By the 1911 Census the family had moved to Bishop's Stortford and were living at 6 Tuckers Row, New Town Road, where his father was a Carman for a Brewery.

Wartime Service

He served in the Mercantile Marine Reserve. He was killed when the X6 as well as X110, which were being towed by H M Tug Desire, were confronted by a German U Boat 2.5 miles off Filey. She sank the tug with gunfire and laid bombs on the two lighters. His body was not recovered for burial.

Additional Information

A lighter is a barge. The Royal Navy ordered 225 motorised lighters during the war as landing craft. These were given nos. X 1 to X 225. X1 to X200 were 105 feet, 6 inches long, with a beam of 21 feet and a displacement of 160 tons.
