Biography

The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:

The latest name on the list of our old boys who have given their lives for their country is that of Philip Edgar Ward, the youngest son of the late Richard Ward of St. Asaph. He was born ill 1891 and came to St. Edmund's with his elder brothers Leo and Alban in September 1901, soon after his father's death. After leaving school he went out to Canada, where he took up farming and he himself developed into a fine man over six feet high. Just before the war he returned to England to visit his mother who is living at Wavertree, Liverpool. On the outbreak of hostilities he joined the 10th Liverpool Scottish and became a Lance-corporal. He was so severely wounded in action on February 25th that he died next day. The deepest sympathy will be felt with his mother in her great loss. Mass was offered in the College Chapel for the repose of his soul on the day after we received the news of his death.
