Pre War

Frank Lewis WARD was born on 15th July 1896, in Arkley, Hertfordshire, son of Jesse Ward an Estate carpenter and Agnes Ward (nee Read). One of their eight children although one died in infancy.


He was Baptised on 20th September 1896, in Chipping Barnet, Herts.


1901 Census records Frank aged 4, living with his parents, four brothers and two sister Sylvia (8) and Florence (8 months) at 1 Rose Cottage, Barnet gate, Arkley, Herts/Middx.


Frank attended Arkley Church of England school from March 1900 to July 1904.


1911 Census, Frank aged 14, has left school, he is recorded as a Chauffeur Domestic, living with his parents, four brothers and sister Florence (10), at 1 Rose Cottage, Barnet Gate, Arkley, Herts/Middx.

Wartime Service

Frank enlisted at High Barnet, Herts, posted to the 12th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, (County of London Regiment) and issued with the service number GS/14252.


In June 1915 the 12th Battalion, move to Aldershot, for final training, they were mobilized for war service sailing from Folkestone for Boulogne, France, on 1st September 1915. Initial stationed around Etaples and St Pol, later moving in to the reserve for the assault at Loos, going in to action on 26th September 1915, they suffered heavy losses. (Battle of Loos 25th September 1915 – 8th October 1915.


Frank was Killed in Action on 13th January 1916, aged 19, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium to the missing. Panel 6.

Additional Information

His effects of £10-09s-01d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £5, went to his father Jesse.
