John Franklin was born in Hemel Hempstead, Herts in 1892, the son of Joseph and Rhoda Franklin and baptised in Bovingdon, nr. Hemel Hempstead on 31 July 1892. 


On the 1901 Census, the family were living at Bourne End Lane, Northchurch, Herts where his father was working as a Farm Labourer. By 1911 they were in Bourne End, Boxmoor, where John was working as a Nurseryman/Gardener. 

Wartime Service

He served as a Gunner with the Royal Field Artillery and was killed in action at the Battle of Arras on 29 July 1917.


He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £8 1s 4d.
