He was born in Hitchin. His home was at 4, Biggin Lane, Hitchin and he was the eldest son of Maria French and the late Arthur George French.

Wartime Service

Albert, joined up in September 1914 and was initially in the Royal Field Artillery. Later he was moved to the Bedfords and given Regimental Number 13629. He was posted to the 6th Battalion and was killed in action in France, having been shot through the heart by a sniper when going out to an advanced position.


The Battalion took over a line of trenches in the Rossignol Wood sector with three Companies in the front line and one in support on the 1st April 1918 and remained there until the 9th April. The casualties during the period were 32 other ranks killed, 70 wounded, 35 gassed and 4 died of wounds although no major engagement was in progress.


He has no known grave, but is remembered on Panels 28 & 29 of the Memorial to the Missing in France.
