Born on 24 Jun 1888 in Kensington, London son of Ernest Rowland and Elizabeth Charlotte Frere, of St. George's Lodge, Cookham, Berkshire and baptised on 28 Jul 1888 in Kensington. Educated at Haileybury College 1901-07 and Brasenose College, Oxford (Captain of Boats). Entered firm of solicitors in Lincoln’s Inn Fields as an articled clerk. He was unmarried. Joined the London Rifle Brigade in 1909 and retired in 1913.

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of war, he was given a commission as Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade and was appointed Adjutant shortly afterwards. He entered France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. Was injured by shellfire at Laventie and died in the Casualty Clearing Station in Merville.
