Lionel Beaufoy Frost was born in Baldock in 1895,  the son of William and Sarah Jane Frost (nee Willmott) and one of six children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Elm Tree Row, Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, where his father was working as a farm labourer. By 1911 they had moved to Cross Lane, Melbourn, at which time Lionel was working as a labourer at the Foxton Printing Works. 


His parents later lived at 23 Melbourn Street, Royston, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Cambridge and served with the  3/4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. 


Lionel was killed in action on 30 August 1916, aged 19, during the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 19s 3d. She also received a pension, initially of 1s a week in May 1918, rising to 5s a week from 6 November 1918.
