Pre War
Edward James Warren was born in 1895 in Charlwood, Surrey, the son of Francis Richard (known as Frank) and Maria (Mary) Warren (nee Charman). He had a brother William who died in 1901 aged 8.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Horley Road, Charlwood Surrey where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. His mother died in 1902 and on the 1911 Census his father was a boarder at the home of George and Kate Illman at 2 Spicers Villas, Charlwood. [N.B. G Illman at 2 Spicers Villas is recorded on the CWGC website headstone documents]. The whereabouts of Edward in 1911 is not known, but it is likely he was living in Bushey or Bushey Heath when he enlisted as this is stated on the Soldiers Died in the Great War record.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford and served with the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 30 July 1915, when they left from Southampton on the Empress Queen and arrived at Le Havre.
On 15 July 1916, the 6th Battalion were in action at the Attack on Pozieres (part of the Battle of Bazentin Ridge during the Battle of the Somme). The attack was held up by hostile machine guns and casualties were high. The Battalion war diary recorded that 3 Officers and 32 Other Ranks were killed and 9 Officers and 174 Other Ranks were wounded.
Edward was one of the many who were wounded and he died of his wounds the following day, 16 July 1916, aged 21. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £11 3s 8d. No pension records have been found.
