Pre War

Born on 6 Dec 1869 at sea in the Persian Gulf son of Colonel Charles Edward and Anne Nairn (Anstruther) Stewart of Ornochkenoch, Kirkcudbright. Educated at Haileybury College 1884-86 and the Royal Military College Sandhurst. Gazetted in Oct 1890 to the 2nd Bn. Seaforth Highlanders and joined the Regiment in India. Served on the Chitral Relief Force 1895 and, after promotion to Captain in 1899, in South Africa 1899-1902 Distinguished Service Order (1901). Appointed Major in 1907 and returned to India. He married Edith Evelyn Vivian on 8 Nov 1911 and had two children.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of the war, he entered France on 12 Oct 1914 and was injured by an exploding shell at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in Mar 1915 and repatriated to England. He returned to France as Lt Col to command 1st/ 4th Bn. in Mar 1916 and was killed in action by a trench mortar while making an inspection of the lines.
