Bertie (Bert) Waterton was born in 1888 in Potten End, Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of John and Louisa Waterton. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Potten End where his father was working as a Gardener (not Domestic).  They remained at Potten End in 1911, then living at Nursery House, Potten End, where both Bertie and his father were working as Nurseryman Gardeners.

He married Clara Mothersole in 1912 at Holy Trinity Church, Potten End, Berkhamsted and they lived at Stone House, Potten End, Berkhamsted.  They had two daughters, Joyce Gertrude (born 1913) and Margaret Joan (born 1915).

Wartime Service

He initially enlisted in Watford into the Royal Engineers (Reg. No.60388) but was later transferred to the 433rd Agricultural Company, Labour Corps. (Reg. No. 529893).

He died at home from pneumonia on 7 November 1918 in Berkhamsted and is buried in Potten End Churchyard. 

Additional Information

Probate was granted to his widow Clara in London on 3 January 1919 with effects of £309 19s 11d. She received pay owing of £28 5s 3d which included a war gratuity of £17 10s. She also received a pension of £1 5s 5d a week for herself and her children. His CWGC grave is engraved with the comment that "he is buried elsewhere in this churchyard".
