Pre War

George Robert Watson was born on 15 January 1888, in Aldenham, Herts, son of William Alfred (a Carpenter) and Jane Ann (nee Tucker) Watson.


Baptised on 25 September 1888, in the Parish Church Aldenham, Herts.


1891 Census records George aged 3, living with his parents, brothers William (11), Paris (5) and sister Bessie (8) at Aldenham Abby Park, Otterspool Lane, Aldenham, Herts.  


By 1901 the family had moved to 18, Broxbourne Road, Cann Hall, West Ham, London/Essex, George was working as a Shop Boy.


1911 Census records George, aged 25, single, and back in Hertfordshire, living and working at, Putteridge Park, Offley, Herts, as a Domestic Footman.

Wartime Service

George enlisted at Luton, Beds, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 19488, later posted to The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment with the service number 30442.


George arrived in France on 30 August 1915, and served on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on 10 April 1918, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial to the missing in Belgium.

His father William received his effects of £30-10s-8d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity.
