Pre War

Born on 8 Aug 1880 in Bengeo, Hertford son of John and Selina Gardner and living in Bengeo Street, Hertford with his stepfather in 1891 and in 1901 was a coachman in the Sandeman household at Presdales and living in the stables. He married Emily Ellen Stalley (later Bull) of 49A Eglinton Road, Bow, London on 12 Apr 1914.

Wartime Service

He died when the H.M.S. Bulwark suffered an internal explosion while anchored at Sheerness. About 736 men were lost that day probably due to the accidental ignition of cordite which had been stored next to a boiler.
