Pre War

Frederick Gater was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1896, son of George Samuel Gater a, Stationary Engine Driver at the Royal Gun Powder factory, Waltham Abbey, Middx, and Grace Amelia Gater, (nee Boyes). The sixth of twelve children although two died in infancy. His parents were married at the Church of St John, Hoxton, Middx, on the 17th January 1885.


1901 Census records Frederick aged 4, living with his parents, sister Alice (11) and five brothers at, 5 Harold Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. See Note 1.


1911 Census records Frederick aged 14, working as a Grocer’s Shop Errand Boy, living with his parents, sisters Alice (21), Grace 3 months and five brothers, still at 5 Harold Road.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted at Edmonton, Middx, posted to the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number Z/15893. On completion of his training, he served on the Western Front with the 4th Battalion.


Promoted to Lance Corporal. He died on 1st May 1917 of wounds received in action, aged 21.

Additional Information

His mother Grace received a Dependents pension of 5/- a week from the 6th November 1918, and his War Gratuity of £10-10s-00d. His Pay Owing went to his father George Gater.


His Headstone inscription “THEY WILL BE DONE” was requested by his father George Gater.


His elder brother Private G/46400 George Samual Gater of the 1st/2nd (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers), died on the 29th June 1918, of wound received in Action, he left a widow Jenny and a son Richard.


Note 1: The original 1901 Census document records their name correctly as Gater, but if you carry out a search on the internet it is not found. “Ancestry” have the family as Gate and “Find my Past” as Gates.
