Pre War

Percy James Gayler was born on 15 October 1895 in Hatfield(*1), Herts, the eldest of two sons born to James and Clara Gayler. His parents had been married at Ayot St Peter in 1894.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 131 Islington Road, Highbury, London where his father worked on the railway.  They had moved to 15 Mount Pleasant, Stroud Green, Hornsey by 1911 at which time his father was a passenger guard for the Great Western Railway and Percy was a scholar. He attended the University of London and his name is included in their Student Record War List.


He was living at Stroud Green, Hornsey, London on enlistment. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London and served with the 14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish) in France from 4 July 1915. 


He was killed in action, aged 21 on 25 September 1916 and is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, France.

*1 Although recorded as born in Hertford, it is possible that this was recorded as the nearest 'large' town or ‘postal’ town to Ayot St Peter.


Also remembered on the family grave in Ayot St Peter churchyard. N.B. His father was born in Ayot St Peter, Herts.


His father received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £3 8s 1d. His mother received a pension of 7 shillings a week from 5 June 1917.
