Little Berkhamsted War Memorial

Pre War

Harry was born in Little Berkhamsted in 1893 (indexed as Henry Gayler). In 1911 he was recorded as a ‘garden labourer’ and was living with his brother James (also remembered on this memorial) and their parents George (recorded as an estate woodman) and Emma at Howe Green.

Wartime Service

Harry and James both enlisted at Hertford in the 7th battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment (which suggests that they volunteered in September 1914) and landed in France on 26th July 1915. Harry died of wounds on 22nd December 1915 – probably as a result of a minor skirmish in the front line trenches near Méaulte.

Additional Information

Son of George and Emma Gaylor, of Howe Green, Little Berkhampstead, Hertford.
