Alfred Gentle was born in 1892 in Baldock, Herts, the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Gentle (nee Emery) and one of three children. He was baptised on 7 May 1893 in Baldock.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Royston Road, Bygrave, Baldock, where his father was working as a general labourer. They remained there in 1911, at which time Alfred was working as a butcher's assistant.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Woolwich and served as a gunner with the Royal Field Artillery, A Battery, 104th Brigade in France from 27 August 1915.


Alfred was killed in action on 17 November 1916 but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His sister Alice was his sole legatee and received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £9 14s 9d. She lived at 5 Mansfield Road, Luton, Beds. Although pension cards exist, they suggest a pension was not payable, but gratuity payment was made, although no details are given.


Brother to Arthur Gentle who served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and died in 1916 and who is buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
