Pre War

Alfred Arthur Gibbs was born in Stanmore, Middlesex in 1899, the son of Alfred and Charlotte Gibbs, and was baptised at St Lawrence Church, Little Stanmore, St Lawrence Close, Harrow. 


In 1911 he was living with relatives William and Mary Norwood at 102 School Lane, Bushey, Herts. Alfred was described as 'cousin' and another cousin, Ellen Lanser Wells who was two years older was also living with them.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford and served as a Rifleman with the London Regiment, 9th Battalion (Queen Victoria's Rifles).


Alfred died of wounds on 27 September 1918 at the 5th General Hospital, France. and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. 

Additional Information

His 'foster mother' Mrs Mary Norwood received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 19s 9d.  Pension records have been found with Mrs Mary Norwood as Dependant but do not show if any pension was paid.
