Pre War

George Henry Gigg was born in 1897 in Albury, Herts (near Bishop's Stortford) to Francis and Louisa Gigg.


On the 1911 Census the family were living nr Gunton Lodge, Dunton , Essex and George was working as a houseboy on a farm. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Warley, Essex and served in the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment. The 1st Battalion were in the Balkans at Gallipoli from 25 April 1915, however records show that George did not arrive there until 31 July 1915.


They saw action at Suvla Bay, arriving on 21 August 1915 and took heavy casualties before being evacuated. After  Gallipoli, the 1st Essex were in Egypt for a short time before sailing for France where they took part in the Battle of the Somme. George was killed during an assault on Gueudecourt, which has now become known as the Battle of Fleurs-Courcelette.

His father Francis received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £10 11s 2d.
