Henry was born on 12 Jul 1889 in Little Amwell to Daniel West, stoker of stationary engine, and Elizabeth (nee Potkins).


On the 1891 Census Henry was living at Priors Wood Cottages, Little Amwell with his parents and younger brother Daniel G. Henry was not found on the 1901 Census and on the 1911 Census Henry was living with his parents, at the same address, younger brother William Horace and sister Harriet May.

Wartime Service

Henry enlisted on 4 Sep 1914 as Private 2746 in the Hertfordshire Regiment at Hertford and on the 8 Sep 1914 he volunteered for overseas service (there was no requirement for Territorials to serve other than in the UK at this time) and went to France on 5 Nov 1914 with the 1st Battalion.


The Battalion were entrenched near Zillebeke, Ypres and were heavily shelled on 19 Nov 1914 and Henry, along with 5 others was listed as killed in action. He remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 3s 4d was paid to his mother. His younger brother William Horace served in 8th Bedfordshire Regiment and died of wounds on 21 Dec 1916.
