Albert GILLETT was born in 1880 in Little Hadham, Herts to Aaron Gillett a Labourer and Harriett Gillett,(nee Swallow. One of seven children although one died in infancy.
He was Baptised in the Parish of Little Hadham, Herts, on 6th June 1880.
1881 Census records Albert aged 1, living with his parents, and sister Clara (3), at The Ford, Little Hadham, Herts.
1891 Census, Albert (11), is at school, living with his Uncle Daniel Gillett, a Brewer, at The Ford, Little Hampton, Herts. His parents, and five sisters are living in Chapel Lane, Little Hadham, Herts.
No 1901 Census for Albert was found. His parents, sisters Kate (16) and Grace (10) are still living in Chapel Lane,
Albert married Agnes Rosina Varney of Wormley, Herts, in 1905, they went on to have three children Lillian (B 1907), Frederick (B 1908) and Dorothy (B 1910).
1911 Census, Albert, Agnes and the three children are living, at 11 Occupation Road, Wormley, Herts. His mother in-law widow Mary Varney and his brother in-law John Varney are living with the family. Albert is employed as a Nursery Labourer.
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted at Hoddesdon, Herts, posted to the “Queen’s Own” (Royal West Kent Regiment), issued with the service number G/30596.
On completion of his training Albert saw action on the Western Front. He died on 5th September 1918 of wounds sustained in action, probably in the Montauban area. He is buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Grave Ref: VIII. B. 16.
