Pre War

Frederick was born in Westmill, Herts around 1896, to George and Elizabeth White (nee Aylott) who had married in 1874.

In 1901 the family were living at Westmill, Hitchin. Present were both parents: George and Elizabeth – both 46, George working as an agricultural labourer. Their children were: Benjamin W (22), Sarah (15), Emma (12), Maude (Hilda Maude, 10), Walter (7), Fred (4) and Bertie (2).

By 1911 the family had moved to Little Hadham, Herts. Present were both parents, George still labouring on a farm. The census recorded they had been married for 36 years with 14 children, all living of whom 4 had died. Of the fourteen children, present were Benjamin (32), Emma (22), Hilda (20), Walter now 17 and Frederick now 15 and both farm labourers, and Bertie (12).

The Soldiers Died in the Great War records suggest that he was born in Hertford (believed incorrect) and lived in Buntingford when he enlisted.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted into the Hertfordshire Regiment and formerly 266462.

Additional Information

The CWGC gives the information recorded above, however the medal roll index card suggests that Frederick was known as Frank and served as 4666 and 266462 of the Hertfordshire Regiment and then 235106 of the Lincolnshire Regiment. We believe that his brother George, elder by about 22 years enlisted with Frederick as his service number in the Lincolnshire was 235107 and both previously served in the Herts Regiment – both appear on the Tyne Cot Memorial.  Walter White (another older brother) served in the Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in Palestine in 1918 and is also commemorated on the Westmill War Memorial.
