Joseph was born in Rickmansworth in 1896, the son of Joseph Horbury and Nelly Rose(nee Thackham) Good, and was baptised there on the 12th of April 1896.

In 1901 the family, including Joseph age 3 and his younger brother Frederick, was living in Talbot Road, Rickmansworth. 1911 found the family at 7 Talbot Road, now with four children, Joseph age 15 being a Telegraph Messenger.

Recorded as enlisting in Marylebone, London.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war 96th Battery was in India but was immediately recalled to the UK and joined 27th Division at Winchester on the 19th of November 1914.

The Division landed in France between the 20th and 23rd of December 1914 and concentrated in the area between Aire and Arques. In 1915 they saw action at St Eloi and at the Second Battle of Ypres which lasted from the 22nd of April to the 25th of May 1915.

Among the actions was the Battle of St Julien where Joseph may have sustained the the wounds from which he died on the 27th of April in 8th Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul.
