Pre War

Archie William Gough was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on the 23rd January 1889, son of William James Gough a, Jobbing Gardener and Augusta Jane Gough (nee Chandler), their only son.


He was Baptised William Archie Gough (but went by the name of Archie) in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts, on the 7th April 1889.


1891 Census records Archie aged 2, living with his parents in, Windmill Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


He attended St Mary’s Infants School, Cheshunt, starting in April 1894, then to Holy Trinity School, Waltham Cross, then on to Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, leaving in July 1902, aged 13, to start work.


1901 Census records Archie aged 12, living with his Uncle and Aunt, John & Rose Crouch and their family at, 6 Blindmans Lane, Cheshunt, Herts. 1911 Census, Archie (21), is recorded as working as a Barman in a Public House, still living with his Uncle & Aunt and their family at, 6 Rochfords Villas, Blindmans Lane, Cheshunt, Herts. His parents William & Augusta are recorded as living at, 13 Dominion Road, Croydon, Surrey.

Wartime Service

Archie enlisted at Bedford, Beds, posted to the Prince of Wales’s (North Staffordshire Regiment) with the service number 5158, Later 241869.


On completion of his training, he arrived on the Western Front, serving with the 6th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment.


Archie was Killed in Action on the 3rd October 1918, during the Battle of the Beaurevoir Line (3rd to 5th October 1918), at Montbrehain. The Australians attacked the Village of Beaurevoir and the British the Village of Montbrehain. He is buried in the CWGC Montbrehain British Cemetery in France.
