Pre War

George was born in Little Hadham, Herts. around 1875, to George and Elizabeth White (nee Aylott) who had married in 1874.

In 1881 the family were living at Horse Cross, Braughing, Herts. Present were both parents: George and Elizabeth – both 26, George was working as an agricultural labourer. Their children were: George (6), Florence (4), Benjamin W (2) and Luke (11 months).

In 1891 the family were still at Horse Cross, both parents were present and

George still farm labouring. Their children were: those listed above, George now 16 and also a farm labourer. New siblings were Elizabeth (8), Sarah Ann (5), James (3), Emma (8) and baby Hilda Maud at 1 month.

By 1901 George had left his parents’ home but has not been positively identified in either the 1901 or 1911 census.

He enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

Formerly 5089 in the Hertfordshire Regiment.

Additional Information

We believe that his George, elder by about 22 years enlisted with Frederick, his younger brother by about 22 years as his service number in the Lincolnshire was 235106 and both previously served in the Herts Regiment - both appear on the Tyne Cot Memorial.  Walter White (another older brother) served in the Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in Palestine in 1918 and is also commemorated on the Westmill War Memorial. The Soldiers Died in the Great War records suggest that he was born in Hertford – which must be incorrect and lived in Buntingford when he enlisted.
