Pre War

Albert Goodship was born in Gustard Wood, Hertfordshire in 1879, son of William Goodship, a labourer and Emma (nee Henley). He was baptised on 27 Apr 1879, in the Parish Church, Wheathampstead, Herts. The 1881 Census records Albert aged 2, living with his parents, and siblings, Louise (born 1870), Ada (born 1871), Arthur (born 1872), Charles (born 1874) and Alice (born 1877) in Gustard Wood, Herts. His mother Emma died in the later part of 1887. The 1891 Census records Albert (11), his father William, sister Emma (born 1882) and brother Alfred (Born 1885) living in the St. Albans Union Workhouse, Union Lane, (now Normandy Road), St Albans, Herts.


On 25th Apr 1896, Albert enlisted in the Bedfordshire Militia with the service number 3358, on 10 Jul 1896 he transferred to the regular army, signing on for 7 years with the colours and 5 years in the reserve, with the service number 5777. He was posted to 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment on 21 Nov 1896. Albert was posted to 1st Battalion 27 Dec 1897, when he and his Battalion Regiment went out to the East Indies (India), on his return home on 30 Jan 1904, he was transferred to the Army Reserve for four years, extending for a further four years in 1908. While Albert was away from home his father William Goodship died in 1899.


Albert married Ada Elizabeth Needham, the daughter of William and Agnes Needham of Nettleham, Lincs, in the Parish Church, Nettleham, on 29 July 1907. They went on to have three children, Kathleen (born 1908), Albert (Born 1910 and Eva (born 1913).


1911 Census records Albert employed as a Brass Fettler (removing excess material from foundry items), married to Ada, and they have two children Kathleen Estelle and Albert Eric, living at, 6 Lord Street, Lincoln, Lincs.


The 1/4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment was a Territorial Force with its HQ in Lincoln, it is believed Albert was a member of the Territorial Force with the service number 2217 during peace time. No Service Record could be found for Albert service with the Lincolnshire Regiment.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war, the 1/4 Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was mobilized and ready for war service by the middle of Aug 1914, and moved to Luton, Beds later that month.


The Battalion, part of Lincoln & Leicester Brigade, North Midlands Division, were a Territorial Formation. The Division landed at Le Havre, France, on 1 Mar 1915, and were re-titled on 12 May 1915 as 138th (Lincoln & Leicester) Brigade, 46th (North Midland) Division, and were positioned in the Ypres Salient, seeing action near Hooge, Albert was killed in action just four months later on 14 July 1915.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 0s 1d was paid to Ada, his widow together a pension of 20s 6d a week for herself and the three children, this was reduced to 10/6 a week for the children when Ada married Edward Morrison in August 1916.
