Pre War

James William Nugent Gordon was born 1895 on the island of Montserrat West Indies. He was the eldest son. His father was William Montgomerie Gordon, at one time Asst. Colonial Secretary of the Colony of Trinidad. His mother was Constance Lucretia Nugent.


He was educated at Aldenham, where he was a member of the OTC, in 1913 He went to Birmingham University to study Mining Engineering , He also obtained a commission in 5th Territorial Battalion Black Watch on 19 Jul 1913. 

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of war he volunteered for Active Service: promoted Lieutenant on 1 Sep 1914 he arrived, with his Battalion in France on 1 Nov 1914 and was killed in the trenches at Neuve Chapelle on 22 Feb 1914, being shot through the head.


He was buried with many others of the battalion in an orchard close to the billets of 5th Battalion near Neuve Chapelle in “Black Watch Lane”

His father, Mr. W. M. Gordon of 38, The Latch, Brechin, Forfarshire, ordered his headstone inscription: “IN HIS MIGHTY KEEPING ARE ALSO THEY WHO NOBLY LOOKED ON DEATH"
