Elias was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire on 29th July 1877, son of John Benjamin Stockham a Licenced Victualler and Mary Ann Stockham (nee Durnden).

Baptised on 29th August 1877, in St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. His father dies in 1879.

1881 Census records Elias aged 3, living with his widowed mother a Licenced Victualler in Castle Gate, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. His mother dies in 1889.

1891 Census records Elias aged 13, at school, living with his Uncle & Aunt George & Maud Stockham, Innkeepers in Castle Gate, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Elias married Julia Perkins in the Parish Church in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, on 21st January 1901.

1901 Census records him as married and a Grocer living in Castle Gate, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Then in Potters Hall, Little Munden, Herts.

By 1911 Elias and Julia have two sons Kenneth J. 9, and Alan J. 6, now living in Potters Green, High Cross, Nr Ware, Hertfordshire. His occupation is given as a Poultry Farmer and finally Radwell Bury Farm, Baldock, Herts.


Wartime Service

On enlisting Elias George J. Stockham was posted to the Army Veterinary Corps, with the service number 22864.

Elias died on 19th March 1919, cause of death is not known.


Additional Information

His effects of £13 were left to his wife Julia. On 27th November 1918 King George V conferred the “Royal” prefix to the Corps in recognition of the work the AVC carried out in WW1.
