Pre War

William was born in 1892 in Harpenden to Henry George Whitmarsh, house painter, and Isabella (nee Smith).


The family lived in Heath Road, Harpenden. On the 1911 Census he gave occupation as a motor tyre worker.

Wartime Service

William volunteered on 5 May 1915 as Private 5003 Hertfordshire Regiment and also volunteered for overseas service.


After training with 3/1 Battalion he left Southampton on 13 March 1916 for 1st Battalion in France arriving on 8 April 1916. He was killed in action on 5 May 1916.
