Henry George Gowers was born in Enfield, Middlesex, on the 24th May 1895, son of George Gowers a, Gardener and Lucy Gowers. The youngest of seven children, although four died in infancy. At the time of his birth the family were living in Turkey Street, Enfield, Middx.


1901 Census records Henry aged 6, living with his parents, sister Florence (13) and brother Arthur (8) in,  Jubilee Terrace, High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census records Henry (15), living with his parents, at 228 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts, his occupation is given as a Van Boy on a Milk Van.

Wartime Service

Henry enlisted at Cheshunt, posted to the Army Cycle Corps with the service number 11457, later transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment with the service number 20745.


On completion of his training, he served on the Western Front with the 11th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire regiment. He died on the 14th April 1917, of wounds received in action. He is buried in the CWGC Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a dependents pension of 8/6 a week from 23rd October 1917.


His effects of £4-16s-6d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5-10s-00d, went to his mother and father as joint Legatee’s.
