Pre War
Hubert Percival Wick was born in 1897 in Walthamstow, Essex, the son of Alfred and Edith Wick (nee Cassidy) and one of five children, although one died in infancy. (N.B. His older sister Violet had been born in Anstey.)
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 70 Barclay Road, Walthamstow, where his father was working as a house painter and decorator. They remained in Walthamstow in 1911 but had moved to 173 Grove Road, Walthamstow and his father's occupation was then given as builder.
Before enlistment Hubert worked as a cashier.
Wartime Service
Hubert enlisted on 24 February 1916 in Walthamstow and joined the Rifle Brigade. He was mobilised on 12 June 1916 and sent to France on 25 October 1916, arriving at Le Havre and joining the 13th Battalion in the field on 23 November 1916.
He was initially listed as missing but later confirmed to have been killed in action on 11 April 1917, aged 19, and is buried in Monchy British Cemetery, Monchy-le-Preux, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 16s 7d. His mother received a pension of 4 shillings a week, later rising to 5 shillings a week from 6 November 1918.
Hubert's parents were recorded as living in Anstey on the 1921 Census. His brother Cyril, who had emigrated to Canada, helped to fund the Anstey Memorial.
