Great Gaddesden War Memorial

Thomas Wildman was born in 1885 in Edlesborough, Bucks, (near Eaton Bray, Beds), the son of James and Elizabeth Wildman.  On the 1891 Census the family were living at Edlesborough, where his father was working as a Bricklayer. 


By 1901 they had moved to Water End, Great Gaddesden where his father was Bricklayer and Thomas was a Bricklayer's Labourer.  His parents and sister Laura remained in Great Gaddesden on the 1911 Census. 


He married Florence Jane Hoar on 13 September 1908 at Great Gaddesden and they lived at The Barracks, Great Gaddesden, Water End, Hemel Hempstead. They had three children, Ivy (1909), William (1913) and Frederick (1916).  Not yet found on the 1911 Census.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hemel Hempstead and served initially with the Essex Regiment under Reg. No. 30329, later transferring to the The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment.


He was killed in action on the Somme during operations near the River Ancre. Death was presumed on or since 24 February 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His widow Eleanor received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 14s 4d. She also received a pension of £1 6s 3d for herself and her three children.
