Biography

Herbert Gray was born in the summer of 1879 at Hertford Heath. In the 1901 Census he was recorded as the step-son of Charles Gibbing, a Cowman, living at 32 Townshead Street, Hertford, and working as a Gas Stoker at a Gas Works.

In 1902 he married, and in the 1911 Census was recorded living at 50 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley. It would appear that Herbert first moved from Hertford to the Biggleswade area, as his daughter, Francis, and one of his sons Albert were both born at Biggleswade in 1906 and 1908 respectively. His second son, Horace, was born at Abbots Langley in 1910. In 1911 Herbert worked as a Night Gas Stoker at the Leavesden Asylum.

He was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, serving with the Bedfordshire’s. The Parish Magazine reported that his third son was born in November 1914, and that he had transferred to the 11th Battalion of the Essex Regiment.

Herbert was recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour, serving with the 11th Essex through to the end of the War.

Herbert Gray survived the War.
