Pre War

Henry Green was born in Inverness, Scotland, in November 1877, son of William Green a, Soldier and Charlotte Green (nee Edwards). One of nine children.


His parents William Green and Charlotte Edwards were married in February 1871, at Great Warley, Essex, Charlotte’s home town.


1871 Census records William (34) a Sergeant in the Army married to Charlotte (22), their address is Milton Barracks, Milton, Gravesend, Kent. It is believed William was serving with the 1st/19th Regiment of Foot.


Henry was Baptised at St Marys Church, Inverness, Scotland, on the 3rd January 1878.


1881 Census records Henry aged 3, at school, living with his parents, brothers William (9), Frederick (1), sisters Rose (7) and Charlotte (5) in, Woollard Street, Waltham Abbey, Essex. His father William had retired from the Army and is now employed as a Collector for The Prudential Assurance Company.


1891 Census records Henry aged 13, living with his parents, brothers, William (19), Frederick (11), Percy (9), sisters Beatrice (4) and Daisy (2) at, 2 Queens Road, Cheshunt, Herts. The family had a Lodger Widower Thomas Rule.


Henry married Florence Mary Hasler in January 1897, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx. They went on to have a son Frank Henry Green born in November 1897.


1901 Census records Henry (23), as married, his occupation is given as a Machinist in the Gun Trade, he is boarding with Widow Susan Baily and her family at, 5 Ordnance Cottages, Ordnance Road, Enfield, Middx.


1911 Census records Henry (32), as married, his occupation a Horticultural Labourer, he is boarding with Widow Mary Sanders and her mother at, 288 High Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.

Wartime Service

Henry travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment, issued with the service number 4/5701. He arrived in France on the 11th November 1914, with the 1st Battalion, seeing action on the Western Front.


He was Killed in Action on the 12th March 1915, during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. (10th – 13th March 1915). He has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial in France to the missing.

Additional Information

His Effects of £3-4s-4d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £4, went to his widow Florence.


His Brothers Private 6231 Percy Lewis Green was Killed in Action on the 31st October 1914, and Brother Private 1762 Herbert E. Green was Killed in Action on the 27th May 1916.


CWGC Incorrectly record his service number as 415701, it should be 4/5701 - this was reported and has now been corrected on the CWGC data base.
