Pre War

John Griffiths  was born in Bradgate, Escomb, County Durham in 1889 to John Griffiths, a coal miner, and Hannah S (nee Etherington).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, David (born 1876), Margaret (born 1877), Mary (born 1883), Thomas (born 1886), John, were living at Old Row, Escomb, Auckland, County Durham. Also recorded was Thomas Morgan as a lodger and retired miner.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Thomas, John, Joseph (born 1900), David, with neices Hannah (born 1897) and Lizzie (born 1898) at King Street, Witton Park, Escomb. 


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Thomas, John and Joseph were living at King Street, Witton Park, Escomb.


John married Emily Jeffrey in 1915 in Berkhamsted district.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for John. He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 20110.


He was posted into the 12 (Service) Battalion as part of 62 Brigade, 21 Division. John and the Division went to France in Sep 15 and were quickly deployed to Loos during the Battle of Loos (25 Sep-8 Oct). They were involved in the Battles of the Somme in 1916 at the Battle of Albert (1-13 Jul).


John was killed in action in this battle on 12 Jul 1916. His remains were not recovered and he is rememberes on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £7 10s and arrears of £4 9s 10d was paid to his widow Emily.
