Pre War

Edward was born in Redbourn in 1885 to Horace Gunnell a watercress grower, and Isabella (nee Ebbs).


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Cold Harbour, Harpenden. Edward had 2 brothers and 6 sisters, He was employed as a chauffeur to Lady St Oswald at Nostell Priory, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Edward married Florence Chambers in 1916 in Gnossall, Staffs.

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted in Leeds in February 1915 joining the Army Service Corps as Private M2/045642 as a qualified driver MT.


At some time he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He went to France on 26 Jul 1915 and was attached to 90 Siege Gun battery Royal Artillery.


He was killed on 10 July 1917 at a railhead while loading ammunition.

Additional Information

His widow was living in Stafford at the time of death.War gratuity of £11 and arrears of £13 12s 10d paid to his widow Florence. His younger brother Horace served in Royal Field Artillery and was treated for Shell Shock in 1918 surviving the war.
