Herbert Wilsher was born in 1893 in Stotfold, Beds., on to James Millard, a chalk digger, and Minnie (nee Wilshere).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Herbert Wilshire, Frederick (born 1894), Minnie (born 1886), Annie(born 1888), Florence J (born 1890)were living at Dark Lane , Stotfold, Beds.


His whereabouts since the above were not found.


His mother,  (Mrs. Minnie Millard),( later lived at  368, Icknield Way, Letchworth, Herts. 

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for him. Herbert may have enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment around 1910. His serial number 3/5650 indicates his original posting was in 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion, and may have been a Territorial Soldier. Herbert went to France on 11 Sep 1914 to join 1st Battalion in the field near Ypres and taking part in the Battle of Nonne Bosschen, 11 Nov 1914 as part of the Battles of 1st Ypres. In 1915 the Battalion was involved in the Capture of Hill 60 (17-22 Apr).


Herbert was killed in action on 11 Jul 1915 possibly by shelling during a period of trench duty, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £4 and arrears of £17 1s 7d was paid to his mother. Brother Frederick Millard served with Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 1920 and was killed in action on 4 Oct 1916.
