Pre War

Alfred George Hall was born in 1886, in Colney Heath, Hertfordshire, son of William Hall, a Farm Ploughman and Elizabeth Ann Hall (nee Mansfield). The youngest of ten children.


1891 Census records Alfred aged 5, at school, living with his parents and five siblings at, Coursers Farm Cottages, Colney Heath, Herts.


1901 Census sees Alfred aged 15, working as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, brother Frederick (20), and sister Sarah (17), still at Coursers Farm Cottages.


Alfred’s mother Elizabeth died in the early part of 1911, aged 69.


1911 Census records Alfred working as a General Labourer and boarding with Frederick and Luisa Oxtell and family at, 24 Malden Road, Borehamwood, Herts.


Alfred married Kate Clements in the second half of 1911, the marriage was registered in the District of Barnet.

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted at Bedford, posted to the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 19180.


Alfred and his Battalion were stationed at Codford Camp, Wiltshire when they were mobilized for war on 25 July 1915. The Battalion left Codford the following day the 26th for Folkstone, sailing aboard the S.S. Onward for Boulogne, France, arriving the same day. The Battalion disembarked and marched to Ostronove Rest Camp, about 3 miles outside of Boulogne.


The 7th battalion served entirely on the Western Front. In July 1918, the Battalion was absorbed into the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, it was while serving with “B” Company, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, that Alfred was killed in action on 18 September 1918, during the attack on Ronssoy Village. (Part of the Battle of the Hindenburg Line – The battle of Epeby).


Alfred was awarded the Military Medal, posthumously for his bravery during the attack on Ronssoy Village.

Additional Information

His widow Kate received a widows pension of 27/11, a week from 7 April 1919, Kate also received his effects of £21-13s-2d, pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £21. The CWGC record his mothers name as Mary Hall, all other records have her as Elizabeth Hall.
