Edward Thomas Hall was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on the 20th July 1892, son of George Hall a, Carman (Driver of a Horse Drawn Vehicle) and Emma Hall (nee Tinley). Believed to be one of nine children.

His parents George Hall and Emma Tinley were married at Saint Botolph, Bishopsgate, City of London, on the 7th November 1880.

He was Baptised on the 21st August 1892, in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts.

1901 Census records Edward aged 8, living with his parents, brothers, George (Ernest George) (12), Harry (8 months) sisters Ellen (14), Caroline (10), and Millicent (2) at, 5 Hatton Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Brother Harry Hall was born later in 1901 year.

In 1910 Edward enlisted in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (DCLI) and issued with the service number 9442.

1911 Census records Edward aged 19, single, and a Private in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry Stationed at Milton Barracks, Gravesend, Kent.

His father George Hall died in the early part of 1918.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war, the 1st Battalion, DCLI was stationed at the Curragh Camp in Ireland, they were mobilized for war and proceeded to France.

Edward arrived in France on the 19th December 1914, seeing action on the Western Front. He died on the 8th August 1916, at No 36. Casualty Clearing Station, Heilly, in France, of wounds received in action. He is buried in the CWGC Heilly Station Cemetery Mericourt-L’Abbe, France.

Additional Information

His effects of £9-4s-4d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £11-10s-00d, went to his mother Emma Hall.

His Elder brother Private 9161 Ernest George Hall died on the 4th August 1917.

Both brothers have the same Headstone inscription “BE OF GOOD CHEER” requested by there mother Emma Hall.
