Pre War

Henry WINTER was born on 2nd January 1892, in London Colney, Hertfordshire, son of Charles Winter a Thrashing Machine Engine Driver and Susan Winter (nee Roberts). One of their six children although one died in infancy. His parents married in 1883, in Barnet, Herts.

He was Baptised on 3rd April 1892, in the Parish of Colney-St Peter, Herts.

1901 Census records Henry aged 9, living with his parents, brother William (17), sisters Fanny (13), Mabel (10), and Ada (3), in Bell Lane, London Colney, Herts.

1911 Census, William (19) is employed as a Groom/Domestic, living with his parents and sister Ada (15) at Ridge Hill Farm, Ridge, Herts.

At the beginning of 1913, Henry joined the Great Eastern Railway Company at Stratford, as a window cleaner, in March 1913, he was transferred to Palace Gate, where six months later he became acting Engine Fireman.

Henry married Isabella Dunn on 15th May 1915, in London Colney, Herts.

Wartime Service

Henry enlisted at Islington, Lon/Middx, posted to Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment), issued with the service No. 11488.

Henry and the 6th Battalion, trained at Colchester, later moving to Salisbury Plain for final training before heading to France on 25th/26th July 1915.

Henry (Harry on his military records) was Killed in action on 3rd June 1916, aged 24, he is buried in Carnoy Military Cemetery, France. Grave Ref: Q. 7.

Additional Information

Isabella received a widow’s pension of 10/- a week from18th December 1916, and his effects of £2-15s-08d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £8.

 *1 It seem likely that Harry (as he is listed in the Soldiers Died in the Great War) is Henry (as he is listed in the CWGC) and on the London Colney Village memorial.
