Pre War

Donald Courtland was born in Camberwell, London in 1899 to Henry Courtland Withers, Grocers assistant, and Julia Joyce (nee Steele). On the 1901 Census the family were living at Bawdale Road, Camberwell. By the 1911 Census they had moved to Fife Road, Kingston-on-Thames where Donald’s father was now manager of a Wine & Spirits outlet. Donald lived at some time in Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Donald was enlisted as Rifleman 41411 in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consorts Own). After a period of training he was posted to France to Join 13 (Service) Battalion Rifle Brigade. They were involved in the Battle of Albert (21 – 23 Aug 1918). Donald was killed in action on 23 Aug 1918.
