Pre War

William was born in 1862, in Little Wymondley. The son of James Wolfe and Jane Wolfe (nee Hare). He was one of 10 children. William was Baptised on the 14th June 1863, in Little Wymondley. The 1871 census recorded William aged 8, living with his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters, in Little Wymondley. By 1881, still living with his parents, and now with4 brothers and 4 sisters, in Little Wymondley. His occupation is given as a Railway Porter. William married Annie Ansel on the 20th March 1886, in Little Wymondley. They had 11 Children. In 1891 the census recorded William, aged 28, and Annie with 2 daughters, Gertrude 4, and Alice 2 months and living at 171 Tiverton Road, Tottenham. His occupation is a Bricklayers Labourer. By 1901 they had 6 children and living at 76 Pooles Park, Islington. His occupation is given as a Builders Labourer (Scaffolder) and then in 1911 7 children and at 4 Palmerston Road, Finsbury Park. His occupation is given as a General Labourer.

Wartime Service

William enlisted in Holborn. Joining the Army Service Corp (Later to become the Royal Army Service Corp), with the service number T4/129093. He was later transferred to the Royal Engineers with the service number 153644. William arrives in France on the 21st October 1915. He died at home on the 22nd October 1917. Cause of death not known. William was buried in Little Wymondley Churchyard on the27th October 1917, complete with CWGC Headstone. At the time of his death he was Acting Lance Corporal.

His personal inscription on the headstone reads: “Husband of Annie Wolfe, of 6 Playford Rd, Finsbury Park, London.
