Herbert Stanley Womwell was born at Ickleford, Herts, in 1897, the son of William and Emma J Womwell of Village Street, Ickleford and one of six children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living in Village Street, Ickleford, where his father was working as a Miller. They had moved to Shillington Mill, Gravenhurst, Ampthill, Beds by 1911 where his father was the Miller and Herbert was a 14 year old scholar. 

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted at Hitchin, Herts and served with the 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment as Lance Corporal. 


He was killed in action on 8 October 1918, probably during the Battle of Cambrai on the Hindenburg Line, and is buried in Brancourt-le-Grand Military Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £8 10s and two separate payments of pay owing totalling £13 6s 11d.


His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
