Pre War

Ernest was the son of Charles and Fanny Manion, and Fanny was living at Nether St Widford when he was killed. He was born in Standon in 1896 and was living in Puckeridge in1901 with his grandparents and his mother. His father appears to be absent at the time of the census.

In 1911 Ernest was living with his mother in Widford and was working as a domestic gardener. His father died in 1916.

Wartime Service

Enlisted as a volunteer in November 1914 (said in some army records to be at Exeter but we think this an error, as he gave a Widford address at attestation).

He landed in France March 1915. He was killed 22nd April 1917 and initially buried in the German cemetery at Henin sur Cojeul along with 28 other soldiers but later reburied at Ficheux.
