Ernest William Wood was born in 1890 in Tottenham to Edward Wood, gas fitter, and Mary Elizabeth (nee Powney).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Richard Edward (born 1886), Frances Mary (born 1888) and Ernest W were living at 6, Orpingley Road, Islington, Middx.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Richard E, Frances M, Ernest W, Arthur James (born 1894), Sidney (born 1895) and Constance Mary (born 1897) were living at 129, Junction Road, Islington.
On the 1911 Census Ernest was a clerk at the Gas Light & Coke Company as was his father Edward. He was living with his parents, Richard (a clerk), Frances M (an underwear machinist), Arthur (baker’s assistant), Sidney (errand boy for tobacconist), and Constance (at school) at 34, Hollingsworth Street, Islington.
Ernest married May Bird on 27 Nov 1915 at St Andrew, Whitehall Park, Islington, Middx., They lived at 7, Church Lane, Norton , Letchworth, Herts.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Ernest. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 362822. He was posted to 120 Siege Battery and went to France in July 1916. 120 Siege Battery consisting initially of 4 – 8 inch Howitzers (latter increased to 6) was allocated to various Heavy Artillery Groups as decided by General Staff.
Ernest was captured by the Germans on 11 Jul 1918 and died that day of Lung Haemorrhage whilst a Prisoner of War of Germans at Dolstenhausen, Wesel (notified on 19 Aug 1918).

War Gratuity of £11 10s and arrears of £11 16s 8d was paid to his widow May.
